1984 World Snooker Championship

The 1984 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between 21 April and 7 May 1984.^[1]

Notable moments

• Future World Champions Joe Johnson and John Parrott made their debuts. Parrott beat the 1983 semi-finalist Tony Knowles 10–7 in the first round before losing to Dennis Taylor who beat Johnson 10–1 in the first round.

• Other players who made their debuts that year were Neal Foulds, Warren King, Roy Andrewartha, Marcel Gauvreau, Paul Mifsud (the first Maltese player), Mario Morra and Eddie Sinclair. All the debutants except Foulds and King played at the Crucible for the first and only time and all except Foulds and John Parrott lost their first round matches.

• Jimmy White played in his first final where he lost to Steve Davis 16–18. It would be the first of six World Championship final defeats. In the match, he was 4–12 behind at the end of the first day. On the second day, White fought back and cut the score to 11–13 behind at the end of the afternoon session. By the evening session he had made breaks of 64,72 and 53 to trail by only one frame 16–17 but Davis won the 34th frame and sealed victory 18–16; becoming the first player at the Crucible to retain the title.

• Eight-time winner Fred Davis made his final World Championship appearance, losing 4–10 to Bill Werbeniuk. Davis had first played in the World Championship in 1937. Aged 70 years and 8 months, he became the tournament's oldest ever player.^[2]

• There were 8 centuries in the 1984 World Championship which is the lowest number of centuries since 1978. The highest break of the televised stages was 138 made by Rex Williams and the pre-televised stages was 112 made by Jim Donnelly.
